We are social beings, we grow up and live in groups from a very early age: family, school, work, and friendship groups. Therefore, interaction with others is part of our daily lives and requires a series of skills that we gradually build over time.
Group Therapy
Social relationships create satisfaction, support, fulfillment, and personal growth. However, on a day to day basis, it is common for communication problems to occur. Likewise, there is often difficulty resolving problems such as shyness, inhibition, fears and low self-esteem to name some examples. These difficulties can be resolved through interaction with others, but also by taking a different personal attitude, using a pathway which can be both functional and enriching. Equally, even when there are no problems but we want to improve on specific abilities or develop them, the group can provide an ideal place to achieve these goals.
What does group therapy consist of ?
Group therapy is based around a specific matter that all of the participants have in common and linked to the problems or skills to be developed. Some examples of workshops are: Development of Social Skills, Improving Self-esteem, Public Speaking Techniques, Anxiety Reduction, Stress Management, amongst other examples, which may arise depending on the needs of the participants.
Groups are made up of 4-8 people who have compatible profiles. The dynamic is based around psychoeducation: learning and practicing certain skills. Each exercise is begun with a short theoretical introduction, which is followed by putting into practice as “you learn by doing”. After each exercise, we go around the group to see how everybody feels, the difficulties they have experienced and what the exercise has contributed. This helps to emphasise improvements and resolve problems. Listening to fellow group members helps to normalise what we feel and allows us to see things from another perspective and broaden our horizons.
Why participate in group therapy?
YoungTeenagersBecause it is a very interesting vehicle for therapy. Here you can meet similar people to yourself who also share your difficulties and your desire to overcome them, or your motivation to grow and learn. Through identification and empathy with others in a group context, you have the opportunity to help and to be helped. This has enormous personal benefits, which go well beyond what is discussed during the workshop..
